A Sight For Sore Eyes

13 Mar

robin

I hear him, but I don’t (yet) see him. The American Robin! He’s always a very welcome sight for winter-weary eyes and ears. Soon he and his compatriots will pepper my lawn with their red bellies, growing fat, feeding on the awakening worms in the ground. I can’t wait.

Photo courtesy of kevincole. Go there to see his photos of baby Robins; very nice!

Gimme That Old Time Religion

1791 Church Paris NY

An old church on Paris Green, in Paris, NY. I’d heard that Jonathan Edwards’ son, Jonathan Edwards, Jr. traveled to this area to establish the church. The building next to the church is an old parsonage. The edifices are a fine example of Upstate New York Greek Revival architecture.

Old Rusty

Old Rusty

Old Rusty

Took this at a salvage barn on Route 20, just outside the village of Madison, NY.

I’ve driven past this place for about twenty years. Never stopped in, although I’ve always wanted to. There’s a fascinating lineup of 100-year old doors, standing at attention against the outside of the barn. Quite a few of them are sagging after two decades, now. I wonder what fascinating old treasures lurk inside the place.

I’m going to REALLY have to stop in next time.

Wispy White Road

Snowy Road Sauquoit NY

Taken up in the rural elevations of Sauquoit, NY. Winter got a late start this season. We had seen no accumulating snow until this day (December 2008). Plenty of cold temperatures and icy flakes, though. January would boast subzero temperatures, and we did manage to get a few feet of snow in Februrary 2009.

I used to love the cold weather and snow, but as I get older I find the winter weather more uncomfortable.

Union Station, Utica

Union Station Utica NY

I snapped this photo when we visited Historic Bagg’s Square in Utica, NY. It’s Union Station and has been kept up marvelously well. It remains a very active public transit station. The Department of Motor Vehicles and a few small shops keep it busy, too.
