Autumn Repose

AutumnRepose

Taken from the Baron von Steuben Memorial Burial Site in Remsen, NY, at the foothills of the Adirondacks. It remains one of our favorite woodsy areas to visit and explore. We are devout history students, and since this area is also relevant to history (being the home of an American Revolutionary general), it makes this area all the more beloved to us.

Greek Revival in Hinckley, NY

Greek Revival in sepia

Taken out by the Hinckley Reservoir; I forgot which road.

I love this photo. I love the house! Greek Revival architecture is everywhere in rural Upstate. Farmers of the 1840s built these elegant houses at the edges of their cornfields, and many still remain. It’s quite ironic to drive by these homesteads, with their busted old tractors in the front yard, scraggly corn shocks dotting the backyard, and a Gone With the Wind-esque white elephant towering over the hillside.

Yet the architecture is so clean and lovely.

Pine Peaks, Remsen, NY

BeautifulSkyandPines

Taken at the Baron von Steuben Burial Memorial Site in Remsen, NY. The area here is breathtakingly beautiful. It’s thickly forested, with clusters of maples, oaks, firs, and pines surrounding von Steuben’s burial site.

We could easily get lost in the forest, but also in time. It was like walking into another world. We got a thrill when a great eagle rustled in the trees above our heads and took off with a whoosh.

The Baron was elemental in aiding the Americans during the quest for independence, You can read more about the Baron and our visits, here and here.
