Going Underground

30 Nov

32 Winding Way

In case you haven’t heard, we went to Howe Caverns earlier this week, as I breathlessly and repeatedly reported on my blogs. I can’t help it! Howe Caverns is thrilling. Everyoine should visit, at least once. This was my third visit. :)

The beauty of the formations is breathtaking, and the process of how the cave developed is simply inspiring. Here, we visitors were all the same, dwarfed by the grandeur and vastness of the earth– no matter if you were a raleigh accountant or a computer scientist, a kid with Downs Syndrome or a blogger. :) And we had such folks in our group. :) We were all partners together, witnessing the amazing creation of the caverns. Simply amazing!

I will say– photography is difficult here. You can’t breathe while taking a photo or it will be blurry. But I disliked using the flash because the garish light looked ugly against the gray walls. So I don’t mind the double exposure. Hope you don’t. :)

Fort Ti Bulls Eye

Bulls Eye Glass

I love this photo. :) It was taken at Fort Ticonderoga, now a distant memory since our visit in September…. It was a terribly hot day, humid and lush with the surrounding Adirondack greenery. It seems a million years away right now, as we are in the grips of mid-November with its dry cool wind and scraggly dried-leaf landscape.

The museum was very good. I had no idea that the place was owned by a non-profit group. I assumed it was run by the state, but I was wrong. My favorite part was wandering the grassy knolls and exploring the stone walls, and viewing the very old artifacts. The artifacts were astonishing, I thought. The gun of Ethan Allen?! The powder horn of Philip Schuyler?! The sword of Alexander Hamilton, the lace of Martha Washington’s wedding dress?! The place had little pieces of so many interesting things: personalized coins, an old 1750 French armor breastplate, George Washington’s watch key… all very cool!

Still, it’s hard to believe that we visited only two months ago. It seems like an eternity.

Another Bridge Shot

…. lol. Well, I just keep snapping and snapping as we passed beneath the bridge! I think the effect is interesting. ;)

Just a Cool Photo

I’ve been organizing my summer travel photos (finally). I realized to my horror that I hadn’t even edited our visit to Fraunces Tavern in New York City (haven’t even blogged about it yet!!). I had already wiped out the SD camera card!!! But thank God, I had the raw photos on my computer. Score one, Mom. Close one.

I found a few very nice Hudson River photos in the bunch. The photo, above, is one of them. I snapped them while on the train ride home. Train travel is so pleasant. I really can’t wait to go again. I must first earn a bit more cash to afford those tickets, however. I’m not earning the salary of raleigh attorneys, let’s put it that way. But I do hope to go soon. There is always so much to see!
