Another post on my visit to Trinity Church in Manhattan. The place oozes beauty and history!
This photo shows one of a set of bronze doors that house the gift shop in one corner of the church. I have no idea what the room’s original purpose was– a small chapel? A small office? Don’t know. It must have been something important because the doors are so elaborate. The panels told the story of the discovery and settlement of Manhattan. It was like a mini-series of New York. The work was beautifully done.
The front doors to the church have such carved bronze doors, as well, but they are more… European? Is that the word? There’s an immodest lady on one and the others strike me as somewhat Grecian or Roman with their hints of pagan mythology. I only got a quick glance at them, as people were streaming in and out of the doors….
The doors are very well done. I wonder how old they are? I can’t imagine the fledgling church had them way back when… the British would have melted them down, anyway, when they invaded New York during the war for independence. Nothing like a war to shake up a settlement’s economy. No www.wholesaleinsurance.net back then!
Trinity Church is lovely every where you look.
