Before the Hurricane

15 Oct

B4theHurricane

This was an unexpected photo.

It was taken at sunset, a few hours before Hurricane Irene crashed into Upstate New York on August… 28th, was it? My daughter took the photo. I discovered it on my SD card when I was sifting through a few of them. I cropped the image to make it fit on the web, but otherwise, the photo is completely untouched. WYSIWYG. Pretty amazing!

I think it would make a stunning computer desktop image. Speaking of such…. computers really haven’t gone down much in price, have they? I have been searching for a cheap little thing for my son to use for school, and the prices are outrageous! They certainly haven’t gone down at all. I haven’t yet checked buy cheap desktops online at the source, though. Maybe I’ll find something affordable there.

Have a good weekend, friends. :)

Finding Mount Marcy

??? Can you find it?

I’ve been to the Adirondacks twice in the past 2 weeks. I’ve been desperately needing to get away from the hustle and bustle of city/suburban living, away from the traffic and shopping malls and metal buildings and out into the great outdoors. I adore the Adirondacks. I’d live there year round, if I could.

I’ve snapped hundreds of photos while up there, but I’m still unable to name the mountains. They baffle me. I’m especially interested in Mount Marcy. The photo above was taken from Blue Mountain (elevation approximately 3500 feet)… maybe I’m looking in the wrong direction. I’ve seen others’ photos of Mount Marcy, but I am unable to grasp any identifying features. The highest mountain in New York looks like a… well, a regular old mountain! No knobs, no quirks.

You know, someday, I’m going to CLIMB that mountain.

It Keeps on Ticking…

Lichen1

It takes a lichen but keeps on tichen ticking.

I saw this odd-looking lichen while at the Steuben Memorial Historic Site in Remsen, NY. I’ve seen plenty of lichen in my day, but none that takes this pattern. It looks Celtic, which is pretty neat because the area here was widely settled by the Welsh after the American War for Independence. There’s a historic Welsh graveyard down the street, and even the water tower has a huge red griffin painted on it.

Steuben Marker 1

This land belonged to Baron von Steuben from Prussia– he came to America to help train the Americans how to handle the bayonet for the war for independence. After the war, Steuben stayed in America, and moved to the foothills of the New York Adirondacks (as yet unnamed). He sold some land to the Welsh settlers- not exactly title loans Ohio but this area was very wild and considered the American frontier in the late 1700s. Apparently, the Welsh love Steuben. They and the German Americans set aside this amazing area in dedication to his memory.

Going Thru Old Photos

Feb Snow2

We’ll be seeing this stuff very soon…

I’m going through some of my old photos. I can’t believe it’s been a year already! I usually save all my photos of the year on a CD…. wow, I took a lot of photos this year. Maybe… 2,000? :-p I haven’t edited many of them yet. Ugh. How am I going to get them all on my external hard drive and CD, lol. Whew. I’m exhausted just thinking about it.

Anyway, I spotted a few snowstorm photos. Whoa, it’ll be soon! The husband thinks we will have a hard winter with lots of snow. Batten down the backyard chicken coops, folks, it’ll be a wild ride. We’ve had another soaking wet year and if the jet stream stays consistent, we’ll get clobbered. I don’t mind at all, because I rarely go out in this weather… but we do have to shovel and that is a PAIN.
