Photo Hunters: Yellow

21 Mar

Steuben Marker 1

As a kid, I disliked yellow. As an adult, I like its sunny disposition and cheery brightness. More than anything, I love yellow for what it means to us historians in New York State: historical markers! While on the road, I am always seeking out these blue and yellow historical markers punctuated on open fields or next to old homes.

The state license plate design once looked like these historical markers with the blue body with yellow trim. Now, they are white with the Statue of Liberty on them. I much prefer the historical marker look, it depicts more of what New York is: loaded with history.

You can find more assorted historical markers at my Flickr site and the State’s official marker site, here.

You say you can’t wait to see flowers. I wish I could see colors like that! I used to live in Michigan and loved the falls. Now I live in Texas and we don’t get this beautiful color. Thanks for sharing this beauty!!!! Thanks for visiting.

Great photo. Neat historical marker. Also the yellow leaves in the background are nice. :)

  13. srp March 21, 2009 at 5:16 pm #

I like the background fall foliage as well… it blends in with the lettering on the sign. I seem to remember the blue license plate from NY… Now each state has so many variable plates, it is hard to play that old children’s travel game… find as many state plates as you can.
    Thanks for visiting.

  14. Brita March 21, 2009 at 5:19 pm #

    Great take on the theme!

I remember when the license plates were as you described—my grandparents lived up there in the 60s-70s.

    Lovely scenery behind the sign!
    Have a good weekend!

Great photo to pick for this week! I’ve been reading your blog for ages this morning. I really like all the buildings and the post of your cat out in her harness. :)

  33. Marcy March 21, 2009 at 8:16 pm #

Being a northern New York transplant, I remember well the old license plates. Really missed them when they changed over to the current ones. I also didn’t like yellow when I was younger but now find that certain shades look right purty on me.!!

I love fall. What a great photo!

  35. Mojo March 21, 2009 at 8:34 pm #

Gawd there is such a crude joke in this… but I’ll leave it alone. Let’s just say if it took two years, somebody was doing something seriously wrong!

Okay now that I’m done being an adolescent, I’ll compliment you on your variety of yellows… most of us settled for just one!

  36. Brine Queen March 21, 2009 at 8:39 pm #

I love the colors of the yellow leaves in the background. That is one thing I miss from living on the east coast, the fall season.

    Thanks for stopping by.

I love coming across the historical markers. I have been meaning to pick up a book which the government puts out of historic sites across Canada. It tells you where they all are.

They must have a website. I should check and see…

As a fellow local historian, I also appreciate any civic recognition of the past. New York has more past than my city though. Perth was founded in 1829 :)

Very good for yellow. I love fall. Do they still use the word erection on plaques now a days. I always think of the scene bridge in movie Kate and Leopold.
