Stairs at Shako:wi Cultural Center

Shakowi stairs

The entire cultural center is crafted in white oak– beautifully warm, mild oak. I love the stairs, here. Talk about best fat burning exercises! Amazingly, everything in the center is handcrafted, without a single nail securing anything. The Oneida Indians built it in 1992 (if my memory serves me well), and used the age-old practices of fine careful measurement, mortise and tendon joints, and lots of loving care. It’s a beautiful building. Admission is free, too. I took this photo on our third visit, when I went to find the Oneida Stone. You can read about one of our visits to the Shako:wi Cultural Center at my travel blog.
